Guide to Medicaid Enrollment in New Mexico

How to apply for New Mexico Medicaid (Turquoise Care) — step by step.

New Mexico Medicaid, known as Turquoise Care, provides health coverage — including substance use and behavioral health treatment — to eligible New Mexico residents based on income, household size, age, and other factors. This guide walks through how to apply. It's general information, not a guarantee of eligibility or coverage for any specific service.

How to Apply

New Mexico's Health Care Authority (HCA), through its Income Support Division (ISD), determines Medicaid eligibility. You can apply through any of the following channels:

Medicaid enrollment in New Mexico is open year-round — there is no enrollment deadline.

What You'll Need

What Happens After You Apply

The Health Care Authority typically processes most Medicaid applications within 45 days. You'll be notified by mail once a decision has been made. If you're approved, you'll receive information about your coverage and, if applicable, your assigned managed care organization (MCO).

Keeping Your Coverage — Renewals

Once enrolled, you'll need to periodically renew your coverage. New Mexico's "Renew NM" campaign sends renewal notices in a distinctive turquoise envelope — watch for it, and respond by the deadline listed to avoid a gap in coverage. Renewals can typically be completed online by signing in to your account at the YesNM portal. Keeping your contact information up to date with the Health Care Authority helps make sure you don't miss a renewal notice.

If You Don't Qualify for Medicaid

If you're not eligible for Turquoise Care, New Mexico's health insurance marketplace, beWellnm, offers private insurance plans, often with income-based subsidies that can lower the monthly premium significantly.
